"The strong Florida sun cast dancing shadows of these two palms against the side of the building, now the Casa Monica Hotel in St. Augustine, Florida, but originally a resort hotel built at the turn of the century during the oldest city's Flagler era. The ornate columns echoed the trees and I decided to capture the scene with bright, tropical colors, leaving much of the background as the stark white unpainted paper.

I used a limited number of colors -- Red Rose Deep, Hansa Yellow, Cobalt, and Winsor Blue -- mixing most of my shades on the pallette as opposed to letting them mix on the paper. The colors of the painting are entirely abstract, but because the 'value' (light and dark areas) are accurate, the image is realistic."
