"I was at a gathering with friends in June and several of the children were playing on the rocky edge of the shallow river. The sunlight was strong and the backlighting on little Aubrey made her platinum hair glow and created fabulous highlights and shadows. I took several photos, knowing there was potential for a painting subject. I don't do 'portraits' but I enjoy the challenge - and it is a challenge for me - of painting human subjects involved in an activity. I call them character studies.

Anyway, I had lots of fun with this. I photographed all the steps of creating this painting, from my initial reference photo, along with a few notes about my painting methods and tools.
