"This painting combines my love of capturing the delicate natural beauty that surrounds me (dogwoods grow wild in my woods) and depicting interesting textured surfaces. It is all painted with acrylics, but in a traditional watercolor manner. The surface is a square sheet of heavy watercolor paper, which I torn to create a deckle edge on all sides. The center circle is painted to look like it's a separate sheet, laid on an old rusty piece of tin.

I tried to play up the contrast of these two sections, with the flowering dogwoods painted in many transparent layers of color (the white areas are unpainted paper) and the outer edges painted opaquely. I always varnish my paintings to protect the acrylic surface, and in this case I used a gloss varnish over the center circle and a matte on the rest, furthering the illusion."

This painting was selected from over 450 entries from around the US to be juried into the Dogwood Arts Festival 2009 Regional Fine Art Exhibition, April 3-25, 2009, in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The painting is framed to reveal the deckle edge of the paper, as shown here, with a wide white mat and a solid wood frame that accents the grey and rust tones of the background.
"Nature Paints a Picture" was accepted into the 2010 Tennessee Watercolor Society biennial Exhibition, held in Chattanooga TN, May-June 2010. "Decadence" was also accepted into this prestigeous show, and is an award-winner!
