April in Paradise

April in Paradise

Original Acrylic on Canvas by Judy Lavoie

IMAGE SIZE: 24" x 18"

STATUS: Original Sold

Available: limited edition prints - see below

"The wild flowering dogwood trees in the woods around my home were a strong inspiration for this painting. I had always thought of dogwood trees as hybrid bought at a nursery until my first spring in East Tennessee revealed countless stunning wild dogwoods all over the forest. Hummingbirds return to my feeders in early April, just as the first dogwood blossoms open, so it seemed natural to pair the two. I had never seen hummingbirds perch on a branch until I lived here. Now when 30 or more hummingbirds are at the feeders, others often sit in nearby trees, including dogwoods, hemlock, fruit trees, and others.

I specifically painted this to enter into Knoxville Tennessee's 2009 Dogwood Arts Festival Fine Art Print Exhibition and Competition. It was one of only 42 artworks accepted, and I was very proud when it was chosen by popular vote as a finalist. My other dogwood painting "Nature Paints a Picture" (the one I liked better!) didn't make it into the competition... just shows how subjective art is. I won the online voting, but didn't win the final ballot, but I was happy for the great exposure from being in the exhibition."
